about

#reusearchitecture is a digital journey into reuse in architecture.

reusearchitecture was founded by Sara Fontana in 2017 as a social experiment on instagram, with the aim of creating an endless abacus of exempla related to the idea of reusing in architecture.
The project started as a reaction to the consumerist attitude of our contemporary society.

If you are interested, find out more of our story.
We are currently based in the U.K.

take – make – waste

The hashtags #reusearchitecture and #reuseabacus were created to easily find and group projects that share the same intent: to give new life and character to abounded buildings or realities that were not completely exploited.

Each project represents a different approach to the existing: adaptive reuse, a restoration technique, a new contemporary expansion or a particular tradition of conservation tells a different the story.

The Moritzburg castle in the city of Halle is exemplary of the Gothic military architecture in 15th century in Germany //////// The castle has been home to an art museum since 1904 hosting already a notable collection of modern art, mostly German Expressionism paintings, for over a century /////////////// The challenge arose when the exhibition space needed to be expanded, without modifying or adding onto the original columns //////// Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos created a new exhibition space based on a single, clear architectural idea: the solution was to design a new roof as a large platform, and fold it so that it rises and breaks to allow natural light to enter ////// The original floor was left untouched, and no columns needed to be inserted into the main gallery ? © Laurian Ghinitoiu + various • #reusearchitecture #reuseabacus #reuse #architecture • • • • • #adaptivereuse #redesign #nietosobejano #archiporn #archdaily #dezeen #divisare #germany #moritzburg #lovearchitecture #moritzburgmuseum #extension #roof #contemporary #conservation #conversion #reducereuserecycle

Empire Stores is emblematic of Brooklyn’s transformation from lapsed industrial powerhouse into a growing creative sector designed by s9 architecture in NYC //////This award-winning mixed-use development reimagines a vacant, 19th century warehouse on the DUMBO waterfront as a contemporary creative workplace and community hub //////////////// The conversion of this 450,000 sf complex, provides Brooklyn’s burgeoning Tech Triangle with much-needed office space, and brings retail, dining, public space and exhibition galleries to the neighborhood //////// The campaign of adaptive re-use celebrates and preserves the building’s monumental presence on the waterfront, while improving circulation between DUMBO’s urban fabric and the 85-acre Brooklyn Bridge Park ////// A four-story, open air courtyard excavated from within the center of the building serves as an immersive public space for building tenants, community members, and park visitors #reusearchitecture #reuseabacus #reuse #architecture #adaptivereuse #redesign #conversion #conservation #reducereuserecycle #dumbo #newyork #newyorkcity #brooklyn #s9architecture @s9architecture

The CaixaForum arts centre by Herzog and de Meuron in Madrid, Spain, incorporates walls from the Central Eléctrica Power Station, and a gas station that previously occupied the site, facing the Paseo del Prado and the Botanical Garden vis à vis // It includes galleries, administrative offices and a restaurant in the upper levels, as well as an auditorium below ground level /////// The classified brick walls of the former power station are reminiscences of the early industrial age in Madrid, while the gas station, a purely functional structure, was clearly out of place // The demolition of the gas station created a small plaza between the Paseo del Prado and the new CaixaForum in the converted power station // The removal of the base of the building left a covered plaza under the brick shell, which now appears to float above the street level //This sheltered space under the CaixaForum offers its shade to visitors who want to spend time or meet outside and is at the same time the entrance to the Forum itself #reusearchitecture #reuseabacus #reuse #architecture #herzoganddemeuron #herzoganddemeuronarchitects #madrid #caixa #caixaforum #caixaforummadrid #madrid #spain #museum #reused #redesign #powerstation #former #corten #new #shape #archilovers #architecturelovers #contemporary #contemporaryarchitecture
